What are Disorders of Sexual Development?
Children with a failure to develop normal male or female appearing genitalia are said to have disorders of sexual development. At birth, urgent evaluation is required to determine the sex of the patient. A combination of chromosome tests, hormonal analysis, x-rays and examination, including laparoscopy and cystoscopy are performed in the initial evaluation, to determine what treatment is required. These quite complex anomalies are investigated by a multi-disciplinary team, which includes Paediatric Urologists, Endocrinologists, Psychologists, Geneticists and Biochemists.
